Yes. The IntelliTrac driver app can track business trips using the phones your team already carries. It suits fleets that need trip locations without a device fitted to every vehicle. For continuous vehicle tracking, engine data or safety events, IntelliTrac GPS trackers connect directly to your vehicles. Both feed the same platform, so you can choose the right tracking source for each vehicle from the outset.
How phone tracking works
A driver starts a trip or booking in the app. The phone captures position, speed and heading roughly once a minute until the trip ends, filtering out low-accuracy readings. Phone GPS needs location permissions and the app to be running; movement, phone settings and connectivity affect updates.
Trips appear in IntelliTrac's GPS tracking software, alongside device-tracked vehicles on the live map, journey history and vehicle profiles. Phone tracking is active during business trips, and drivers can see when it is on. Our driver tracking notice guide explains how to communicate its use.
What phones show, and what they miss
| What you need | IntelliTrac trackers | Phone GPS |
|---|---|---|
| Live map position | Second-by-second | About once a minute |
| Journey history and replay | Full detail | Trip-level |
| Ignition, engine hours and engine data | Yes | No |
| Tracking without the driver app | Yes | No |
| Harsh driving and impact events | Yes | No |
| Tamper and after-hours movement alerts | Yes | No |
| Incident footage | With a dashcam | No |
Phone GPS does not connect to the vehicle's ignition, engine or sensors. If the driver does not start a trip, there is no phone-tracked journey to review; booking prompts help drivers start tracking. It also cannot show vehicle movements outside an active trip.
Where phone GPS is a good fit
- Pool cars or passenger vehicles where locations during booked trips meet the fleet's needs.
- Employee-owned vehicles used for business, where fitting a tracker is unsuitable.
- Vehicles awaiting an agreed device installation, where phone GPS provides trip visibility in the meantime.
When to choose IntelliTrac trackers
Choose trackers from the start when you need continuous vehicle tracking, ignition and engine data, driving events, tamper alerts or camera footage. Dedicated hardware gives your fleet visibility independently of the driver's phone. Engine data supports servicing, while movement alerts and video help your team investigate incidents.
IntelliTrac offers plug-in and installed GPS tracking devices. You can also combine devices and phone GPS in the same fleet. Each vehicle keeps its history together as its tracking source changes.
Bring your fleet data across automatically
Drop in your existing CSV or Excel spreadsheet and IntelliTrac's automatic imports bring your fleet data into the platform. You do not need to rebuild the file around a new template. Your vehicle information sits alongside locations, journeys, bookings and reports, whether you use trackers, phone GPS or both.
